This will be my fifth year teaching, my third year at Brookwood Elementary School. I taught first grade my first two years at BES. (The Chick and Duck science unit was one of the coolest units to teach.)
I'm excited about moving to third grade! I'll get a chance to work with students I first taught when I came to Brookwood.
Third grade seems like a fun grade! We get to learn cursive, write fairy tales, and read mysteries. I'm especially looking forward to doing some project-based-learning activities!
Third grade will be new to the both of us. I'm going to try my very best every day, and I expect my students will, too. We're going to make mistakes. As long as we try our best and learn from our mistakes, all will be fine. Maybe even, dare I say, fun?!
Before Brookwood Elementary School
Before teaching at BES, I taught Middle School Science and Social Studies. (Fun Fact: Paper money and gun powder were both Chinese inventions.) I taught kindergarten before that. After finishing student teaching, I worked as a Special Education paraprofessional, working 1:1 with some students, team-teaching second grade, and providing early reading intervention for kindergarteners.
Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked as a marketing manager for two Fortune 500 companies (that means, they were really big companies). I did research and analysis, branding, acquisition marketing, and life-cycle marketing. I was responsible for a combined $3.4 million budget.
One position was about a two hour drive from my house. I took a position closer to home. I was responsible for direct mail, one of the most expensive and least successful areas of marketing for any company. Let’s use some math: the average cost for one direct mail piece was $2.37; one email costs about $0.03. Which one costs less? Email. The company thought so, too.
While I was looking for another marketing job, I began substitute teaching. I feel in love with teaching and decided to go back to school to get a Master’s Degree in Education.
Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the University of Phoenix
Master of Science in Education, emphasis in Special Education from Quincy University.
Currently completing a special education course for endorsement and dual license.
A Little About My Family
I'm married and have two boys. William is finishing his last year in college and will continue to get his Masters of Science in Psychology. Logan is a junior in high school. Mr. Jones, William, Logan, and I are originally from northeastern Illinois. We've lived in Southeastern Wisconsin for more than nine years.
We share our home with two bearded dragons, class pets from when I taught MS Science & Social Studies at a private school in Racine. Their names are Pretty Girl and Blackbeard. We have two cats, Mayhem and Ace. We added a Dwarf Holland Lop bunny to our clan. Her name is Lola.
Packers or Bears?
Good question. Before I met Mr. Jones, I was a total Packers fan. Mr. Jones is a die-hard, true-blue Bears fan. Through watching Bears games, I learned a lot about the game. Packers or Bears? Any team that beats the Dallas Cowboys or New England Patriots is my kind of team. Football... is what I watch when the Chicago Blackhawks aren't playing. GO HAWKS!
What Do I Do Outside of School?
I love to learn and am always researching teaching blogs or reading something. I love landscape photography (some of my work is above). What I enjoy more than any of this is time with my kids.
